Modular UPS solution for the TU Wien – Reliable protection of the main server with growth potential
For the Faculty of Computer Science at the Vienna University of Technology, its own main server is a central research, teaching and administration tool. It is no wonder that special requirements must be met for this technical high-performance device of the faculty - the UPS system used up to now could no longer cope with this. With the 2010 kVA system installed in 80 (which was calculated at the time with a 50% power reserve), it was already clear in 2015 that this power would not last much longer.
For understandable reasons, the faculty did not want to afford an oversized system. Nevertheless, it should be possible to increase the available UPS power in order to be able to meet the presumably ever-growing demand.

For EFFEKTA It was clear: A modular UPS system for the computer science faculty was a given. With an initial output of 160-120 kVA as basic backup and a further 40 kVA as redundancy - this corresponded to the forecast demand for up to 5 years and thus sensibly covered the initial requirements. A final expansion of the new modular UPS up to 320 kVA is easily possible.
To ensure that this impressive size does not exceed the available dimensions of the faculty building, a preliminary inspection was carried out, during which the existing electrical installations were also assessed. Based on this, an offer was made that also took into account the customer's experience with the previous UPS system.
In previous operations, it was found that although an automatic server shutdown had been set up, some residual consumers continued to load the system and thus the batteries continued to discharge, even after the server shutdown had been carried out. The customer also wanted to have this problem resolved as part of the renewal of the UPS system. The requirements were fully met: Since March 2018, the new UPS system of the computer science faculty in the 4th district has been working as desired.

Practicality included: Bypass and programmable circuit shutdown
To ensure easy maintenance of the new UPS system, an external bypass with a nominal current of 630 A was integrated into the design to ensure EFFEKTA-UPS can be completely disconnected in the event of service or a fault without having to switch off the connected loads.
In order to be able to rule out the experience with the old system of unwanted battery loads caused by residual consumers, potential-free contacts were made available which switch depending on the battery capacity. These switching thresholds can be freely programmed so that individual circuit breakers can be specifically controlled by the potential-free contacts and the affected load circuits can be switched off after the server has been shut down.
