Fast and efficient UPS solutions for cooling sensitive vaccines – Three days of power backup for critical cold chains

Reliable UPS protection for corona vaccine cooling in Berlin vaccination centers
In the fight against the corona pandemic, vaccines are the key to saving thousands of lives. But the vaccines are sensitive: the vaccines used in Germany have to be transported and stored at -70° Celsius in order to be 95 percent effective. It is therefore important to secure the power supply for the refrigeration technology that is being installed in the vaccination centers that are being built everywhere: the failure of cooling units due to a power outage could not only jeopardize the rapid vaccination protection for the population, but could also be expensive, as a single dose of the BionTech-Pfizer vaccine, for example, costs over 30 euros. Accordingly, it is not only important that a UPS system functions reliably, its endurance is also crucial, especially in outpatient vaccination centers.
For the three large vaccination centers in the airport buildings of Berlin-Tegel (pictured) and Berlin-Tempelhof as well as on the "Arena Berlin" event site, the requirements are formulated accordingly in terms of capacity and performance: For example, the city council of Berlin put out to tender the required UPS with sufficient power to be able to supply a medicine refrigerator with 600 watts of power consumption for up to three days independently of the power grid.

Requirement: UPS protection for large refrigerators for up to three days.
Built in four days: three days of UPS power for medicine refrigerators
For a particularly long bridging time of a 600 watt consuming medicine refrigerator, a construction is required such as EFFEKTA is happy to implement: We are happy to combine solid, well-thought-out technology and reliable power reserves that are tailored to the individual needs of an order to create an optimal solution in record time. For example, within just four days we built UPS systems for our customer, who will set up the vaccination centers in the Berlin airport buildings. These systems, with a basic output of 3000 VA, can be easily installed in a small control cabinet with an additional charging unit in a space-saving manner. For powerful continuous operation over up to three days, we have also designed a battery system that can be housed away in a separate technical room: 24 batteries, each with a capacity of 200 Ah, support the UPS in supplying power to the medicine refrigerator with the valuable vaccine. As a safety feature, the UPS systems also have a multi-track alarm function: In the event of a fault, not only an alarm tone signals a malfunction, but also a flashlight that draws attention to a problem, and in addition, the UPS system also sends an alarm email to a technician, who can then immediately find out about the type and extent of the fault and, of course, can be on site quickly to fix the problem.
USVs for vaccination centers throughout Germany
In addition to these three large vaccination centers, EFFEKTA Many other such facilities throughout Germany have UPS systems. The online double-converter UPSs from the MKD RT and MCI series are ideal for this: their clean sine wave output ensures optimum power quality even for sensitive applications, and these UPSs are also extremely scalable in terms of their performance duration thanks to additional battery modules.
